Shadowspec is one of the most respected names in premium commercial outdoor umbrellas, and two of their flagship cantilever ranges — the Unity and the Serenity — often come up in the same conversation. They look similar at a glance, but they’re built for different jobs. Here’s a complete comparison.
At a glance
- Shadowspec Unity: The premium architectural cantilever. Sleek lines, premium build, 360° rotation. Best for high-end restaurants, hotels and architectural residential.
- Shadowspec Serenity: The commercial workhorse. Slightly more affordable, tilting cantilever, excellent for cafes and venues that need to track the sun.
Build and materials
Both ranges use marine-grade anodised aluminium frames and Sunbrella canopies. The Unity has a fully-enclosed extrusion design with hidden hardware — cleaner aesthetic, no visible bolts. The Serenity uses a more traditional commercial cantilever construction — still beautiful, slightly more visible hardware, slightly easier to service in the field.
Wind ratings
Both are independently wind-tested. The Unity is typically rated to 50–60 km/h open with the canopy locked. The Serenity is rated similarly with appropriate base weighting. Both close to survive significantly higher winds when not in use.
Tilt and rotation
The Serenity is a tilting cantilever — you can angle the canopy by up to 30° in any direction, plus rotate it 360° around the mast. This makes it excellent for tracking the sun through the afternoon.
The Unity is primarily a rotation-focused design, with optional tilt on some configurations. It’s built to sit upright and shade an area cleanly, rather than to track the sun aggressively.
Sizes available
The Unity comes in 3m and 4m square, plus 3m×3m and 4m×4m Duo (twin-canopy) configurations — ideal for shading large dining or lounge areas. The Serenity is available in 2.7m, 3m and 3.5m squares.
Which should you choose?
Choose the Unity if you want:
- The cleanest architectural look
- Larger canopy sizes (up to 4m)
- Duo configurations for big spaces
- A statement piece for a premium venue or residential project
Choose the Serenity if you want:
- Tilt + rotation to follow the sun
- A more cost-effective premium option
- Easier on-site servicing
- Reliable performance in a traditional cafe or restaurant fit-out
